Let's not leave anyone out!

I'm loving that those of us who aren't at BlogHer are getting lots of parties in as well! I wanna be part of ALL of them, so I need to let you know about BlogHer@Home! This great party even encourages me to drink and take bewb shots if I want! (Not very likely, but I like that I've been given permission!)

So for those of you that don't know me...I'm Christi, a Christian 30something wife of 11 years to Chris and mother to Isaac, 8, and Adam, 5. I am a teacher, and am getting ready to start my first year as a Reading Specialist at two elementary schools. I'm also a grad student, as I am halfway through my Master's cohort in Reading. I love reading, blogging, hanging out at parenting message boards, and I love to nap when I get the chance!

And I'm a fighter. Wanna know what I fight against?! I fight such things as illiteracy, mad parents in her classroom, chocolate, overeating, the battle of the bulge, liberals, non-Christians, and the clutter in her house. I've also been known to battle fibromyalgia and the pain it brings on, depression, and people who mistreat my family and friends.

So if you got through all this and still want to stick around, welcome! Glad to have ya here! Can't wait to get to know you better--bewb shots and all!

Flashback Friday--How Will I Know

http://christis-blahblahblog.blogspot.com

Ah, the early Whitney days! Weren't they the greatest? I knew it was bad news for her when she hooked up with Bobby Brown, though I loved his early work as well!

But I digress! The memories that this song pulls up are numerous and not ALL wonderful! I remember hearing this song one Friday when I was in 7th grade. As it turned out, there was a cute 8th grader who supposedly was crushing on me just like I was on him, and was apparently gonna ask me to 'go with him'. Yes, now you must insert the question that every adult had to ask...where are you going together?! No, no, no--that just meant that we were a couple! This was a real cutie, a popular boy, so I was loving the possibilities!

But alas, things didn't turn out that way. As it turned out, he decided to 'go with' one of my good friends instead, partially because even at 13, she was stacked where I obviously wasn't! Oh, the heartbreak! Oh, the drama! I remember crying so hard when I found out that I couldn't even respond...I just handed the phone to my sister and she had to tell my friend that I'd talk to her later. And it really wasn't as much about the boy as it was that this friend had betrayed me. She had known that I had a crush on him, and she broke 'the code' and went with him anyway.

Funny how now I don't even remember the boy's name, but I know that when I forgave my friend after she apologized, it was the beginning of a lifelong friendship. She realized that a)she shouldn't have done that and b)that I was a true friend, and we started right then becoming much closer. I truly couldn't have made it through the next several years without her friendship! It even lasted me moving 4 hours away and many many long distance phone calls! I'm blessed to say that I even met up with this friend a few months ago with our kids!

Obviously, this story had a happy ending where two friends realize that their relationship is much better than anything a passing BOY can offer them!

I wouldn't want to mention this period of my life without giving respect to another friend at that time who is no longer with us. Allen Gibson was SUCH a nice guy. He was good buddies with the aforementioned boy, and hung around some with the rest of us, too. I ran into him years later when I was working in a neighboring county, and he was just as nice then as he had been in middle school. Sadly, he will killed on the job about a year later. He was a Virginia State Trooper, and was shot by someone he was trying to apprehend in a crime. This was the first time that I had actually known someone my age who died, and it was such a tragic waste! So know that this memory comes with a tiny bit of sadness as I remember the great man Allen did not get the chance to become!

How about you? Link up your favorite memory relating to something in the past here! We'd love to have you join us!

Why yes! Yes, I'm not at BlogHer, thanks for noticing!

Yes, I'm upset about it, but because of all the other great ladies that happen to be staying home as well, we're gonna have some fun of our own! We've got a pity party, a blog hop, a not at blog her get-together, a BlogHer@Home site with fun....hey, we're cool with this!

If this is your first time visiting my blog, then welcome! I'm Christi, the Christian 30something sole writer here! I have been happily married to my best friend Chris for the past 11 years and am proud mama to Isaac, 8, and Adam, 5. I am also in grad school to get my degree in Reading at the same college where I got my undergrad. It is hard work, but it is so worth it! I am a teacher, and teaching reading is my love. I taught first grade for 12 years, but now am going to be a Reading Specialist at two elementary schools in our county.

Education is very important in our family....I am sister to 2 teachers, sister-in-law to one, daughter of one, and daughter-in-law of one as well. The other thing that is very central in our life is our faith: my father is a retired United Methodist minister.

Chris and I are also very blessed to live in the same town/county as most of our family members. Only Chris' parents live temporarily in Southside Virginia, while everyone else lives around here, including our siblings and nieces and nephews. We enjoy getting to see them and spend time with them often.

Let's see...what else?? We have 3 cats and 1 dog, and we lost a dog we'd had for 12 years earlier in the spring. My boys are all 3 (yes, 3....hubby as well!) yellow belts in TaeKwonDo as of earlier this month. My nieces and nephews are active in sports and dance, so you'll hear me brag on them sometimes, too!

So I think I'll close out now....but please come back soon!

Boy, what a day!

Adam and I left the house before 10 thinking we'd have an easy morning/day. We had to go get his Kindergarten shots, but it didn't turn out to be nearly as easy as we thought!

Everything started fine....typical checkup, with filling out paperwork and HIPPA agreements and such. We realized that in '06 we had put off him getting his Chicken Pox vax, so we ended up having to get that in addition to the MMR, Polio, and whatever he other one was...I can't remember! Dr. F decided to go ahead and do a urine and blood workup as well, not only for a lead test for him to enter Kindergarten, but also to check for anemia, which he has had in the past. He weighed 42 pounds and was 45 inches tall.

So....we proceed to the shots...4 of 'em! Then I had Nurse V. to look at a place on his leg that was suspicious, and I'm glad I did since it WAS poison ivy! I also talked to Dr. F about the fact that Adam did not read 20/20 on his vision screening. He said that we could either wait or go ahead and get him checked out. Since we have a family history of vision problems, I opted to go ahead and get it looked at. More about that later.

So after the shots, we proceeded to the lab, where a very small amount of blood was drawn from his finger. Adam was brave through it all!

Until.....

I was signing out, and he started leaning toward me. I said,"What are you doing?" and he didn't answer me, and the receptionist tells me,"He's passed out!" So 2 nurses assisted us in getting him sitting in a chair, and he quickly came to. He was not sure what was going on, and was very pale. One nurse went ahead and laid him down in an exam room again, and laid a cool cloth on his forehead. He was also saying that his mouth hurt. So we waited for a few minutes to make sure he was okay. I stayed calm, but truly....it scared me to death!! I wanted to cry like a baby!!

I had promised Adam that we'd go get him a toy since he'd done so well at the shots and blood draw, so we went to Target to get him some anti-itch for his poison ivy and he picked out a toy. He wanted to go ahead and visit the optometrist before lunch, much to Mommy's growling stomach's dismay!

We saw a nice doctor, who told us that Adam has an astigmatism as well as being slightly far-sighted. We decided to pick out some frames since they were running a special (buy some frames and get the lenses free for anyone under 17--check out Lenscrafters!) The frames we picked out were more expensive than I normally would have allowed, but given the special, I let him get them. We're gonna go get Isaac's eyes checked, too, while they have this deal on so if he needs a pair, we'll get 'em cheaper!

Here's a pic of the frames. I'll get one of Adam IN the glasses so you can see how preciously handsome he looks in them!

We got lunch and went to do a little bit of shopping for ME while waiting for the glasses to get done. Unfortunately there was a machinery problem, so it ended up taking about an hour and a half instead of an hour, but hey--we're flexible!

However, after all this unexpected stuff in one day, I'm worn out! Adam and I took a nap when we got home, and now they're in TaeKwonDo! I realized that I can access free wifi here, so I'll be much more apt to bring my laptop and stay while they're in class from now on!

So....here we are! *insert pic of me with my tongue hanging out!*

It just gets old

It gets frustrating to have plans, and then be hit out of the blue by some physical symptom that leaves you not feeling like doing what you'd planned. I HAVE to go on during the school year, but when I didn't HAVE to go work at one of my schools today, I had to change the plans I'd shared with my 5 year old. He was disappointed, but with stomach cramps and runs to the restroom, I just didn't feel as though it was the most opportune of times to go try to get some work done. Then in comes Isaac from a day filled with fun at day camp, upset because I now say that we might not make it to the local slushie seller.

Yes, it makes me feel like crap to let them down. But you know what? I never asked for this crap called fibromyalgia. I didn't ask to fight anxiety, depression, pain, irritable bowel, and insomnia. I didn't want to feel like I'm 80 some days at 36.

Some days the logic in me flies away and I want to scream, "Why me?? What did I do to deserve this??" It was hard enough dealing with the depression from the age of 15 or 16. Add the rest of the crud to it and it is just NOT fun. Today, it is my elbows. Who has ELBOWS that hurt?? What in the world?? I cannot imagine how I might have strained my freakin' ELBOWS! It is insane.

When I've stood on my feet all day and they hurt, I get it. When I have pain due to lack of movement or stress, I get it. But what has brought this on today? Worrying about something? Nothing? The air being cooler than normal? Who freakin' knows?!

I try not to fuss. I am trying to improve my health by getting rid of bad habits and eating better and exercise, and by stopping when I feel my limits being reached. It is when I am doing those things and I STILL hurt that I start to get frustrated. It just stinks!

Love Chris' heart, his solution is to send me to the doctor. I went yesterday for a med check. There is nothing more they can do. I have to break down and take more meds even though they sometimes make me feel loopy, and otherwise I just have to tough it out. There's nothing more to do. I guess for a man, who just wants to fix his wife's problems, that is very frustrating too. I am so blessed to have him. I folded and sorted several loads of clothes today--yes, I'll readily admit I've been putting it off--and he put them away so I could play with (read: entertain) Adam since Isaac was gone to camp today. He's a sweetheart!

This isn't even what I was blogging about earlier today. But maybe that is what has contributed, me fighting that struggle. I don't know. Whatever it is, I just wish it would GO AWAY!

Until a better day and a better mood.....

I need your prayers

I'm not sick, no one in my family or circle of friends are sick, we all have jobs, no one has been lost or hurt....but I'm feeling very attacked by the Enemy lately. I hate to be vague, but I also don't want to verbalize this to give him any more fodder in his fight against me. The Lord knows the need, and just know that I need prayers to gird me up right now. The Lord is my strength and my shield, and HE will give me the strength to fight in this battle!!

Thank you in advance for your prayers!

You know you're a sister when...

sisters

I am very blessed with two real-life sisters. I am also blessed with several friends who I consider my "sisters of another mother." But most recently, I have discovered that I belong to another sisterhood....a sisterhood that didn't exist a mere 10 years ago. You see, I'm a blogging sister, and therefore have a digital kinship with other women who choose to share their lives 'out there' with the world online.

How do I know that these people are my sisters??

I know they are my sisters....because they GET me.
They understand why I put myself--all the ugly, secret, hurting, happy, silly, crazy things that make up ME--out there for all the world to read.

I know they are my sisters....because the SUPPORT me.
On those days when I'm not quite sure how I'm going to put one foot in front of the other...on the days when I am distressed because of a real life situation....on the days that I request prayer, but can't even verbalize why....they are there. My blogging sisters let me know that they, too, have been there, and that they'll be here for me no matter what.

I know they are my sisters....because they KNOW me.
And I mean it in this way: they know the deep inside me. They don't know the me who weighs more than I did in college, the one who teaches, the one who is kin to so-and-so, the one who goes to that church, or the one who I've heard did that. They know me from the inside out. They might not recognize me right off if they saw me on the street, but if I wore a t-shirt sporting the front page of my blog, they'd be the first to run up and hug me! They know me by my words, and that is to know me in a profound way!

If you aren't part of this sisterhood, you don't know what you are missing. But I also don't know how to explain how this sisterhood has enriched my life! I have laughed til I cried, I have wept for the pain of others, and I have hit the ground face down in prayer to my Jesus over words I've read from these ladies.

They ARE my sisters...and that is all I know!

Flashback Friday--Annie

http://christis-blahblahblog.blogspot.com

I'm late! I'm late! Sorry for that, ya'll! I'm sure you've been hanging on your seats waiting for this, and chewing your nails to the quick! LOL At least I can imagine!

Annie! I am not sure how many times I saw it in the theater, but it was several! I LOVED this movie! I wanted to BE Annie! It started before the moving even came out when my sister saw it on Broadway....I am thinking it was when Sarah Jessica Parker was playing the lead.

I remember going to see it one time (in the theater, again!) with my mom and grandmother, and my grandmother telling me about the comic strip. I distinctly remember her saying that she was surprised that there wasn't more action in the movie since Annie was always getting into some adventure in the 'funny papers'!

Then in college we did a lip sync and dance routine to "It's a Hard Knock Life, which was fun! We did some of the same dance steps from the movie. We won the contest, by the way!

So here, for your viewing pleasure, is "It's a Hard Knock Life!" Enjoy!

So what about you? What are you remembering fondly tonight? Surely you would love to share it with others! All you have to do is make up a post and come back here and use the MckLinky to share it with us!

Have a GREAT weekend!!

Three Things You Don't Know About Me

I decided earlier that I was gonna do the blog hop from my other blog, but now I wanna do it here, too! LOL Is that cheating?! So now if you go to both, you'll know 6 things you didn't know about me!

OK. Here goes.

1. My mom taught my husband in Kindergarten. We both moved away from the area, then were set up on a blind date by 2 of my friends--his aunt and cousin. We went on our first date in August, and were engaged on November 17! Hey, when you know you've got a good thing, why waste time?! We were married the following July. Here we are, 11 years and 2 kids later!!

2. My sisters and I all graduated from high schools in different states. Yes, trivial, but I'm stretching here! Since our dad was a United Methodist minister, we moved as needed. Brenda graduated in Virginia (where we all three live now), Suzy graduated in Tennessee, and I graduated in Georgia.

3. My mom and I were on a plane once with Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor! We were on our way back home from visiting my grandmother in Florida, and for some reason she rode in to Charlotte (I think!) on our little puddle jumper plane! I didn't have the nerve to go try to get her autograph, which I would have been able to get away with at 8 years old in the early 80s, and I've always wished I had.

OK, so now you know these things about me....don't you wanna leave a comment about one of them?!

MckLinky Blog Hop

New FIRST review--and I LOVE this book!

The book is Blue Like Playdough by Tricia Goyer, and it is soooo good! It isn't very long, but I have related to what she is saying in such a powerful way. I just have to share a couple of things from the book with you, and please go read the tour review as well! I promise you won't be disappointed!

This quote is SOOO me! I think I'll copy this and hand it out to people, esp. those who shall remain nameless that talk about how dirty my house is.

It's been said that a messy house is evidence of a messy heart, but it was just the opposite for me. The more I got my heart in order, the more God urged me to move beyond my safe, happy little world...The more I served God and saw Him working in lives, the less concerned I was about a dust-free existence or with how others saw me. I didn't need to impress anyone else because deep down I felt God's approval....I've come to realize that those things (referring to the house being neat) don't matter as much as people--whether it be the people in my house or those in my community and my world. Like my friend Twyla says,"You fight dirt your whole life and then they bury you in it."

Amen and Amen!!

Please overlook: Technorati stuff

mcuxp6843h

How ya doin'?

Whaddaya think about the new look? I am loving it! It feels cleaner to me...and easier to see!

I haven't done a general 'wassup!' update in a while! Nothing too exceptionally exciting is going on around here, and that is WONDERFUL! It is GREAT to just get to hang around the house doing chores and playing with the boys and just BEING. I've had time to get in much more reading and Bible study, and doing more blogging focused on reviews and Bible studies, plus contributing 2 articles a week at Sited and Blogged. I have also started taking part in a FANTASTIC ministry based through Twitter called World Prayer. I get to be the moderator to re-send prayer requests sent through @worldprayr for at least 2 hours a week. This is a dynamic ministry that is still in its grassroots stages, and if you'd like to join in, just let me know, and I'll get you more info!

I am loving having a break from classes, though I keep dreaming that I'm supposed to be going to Emory and I'm not! LOL In my last class, I did get the opportunity to make some plans for working with kids other than first graders, so that has helped me get ready for my new position. I really need to go into the schools, but I've been putting it off--I'm just enjoying spending time with my boys and spending time at home!

Chris has built some shelving in the basement to store stuff, and has gotten lots of junk cleared out! That has been such a big help! This week he and Isaac are gonna take a camping trip all by themselves in a tent! I'm excited for them but Adam and I will miss them!

All three guys are loving their TaeKwonDo classes! They all did wonderfully on their rank test and have moved up to the yellow belt level. Isaac is REALLY into it, and got mad when he realized that his dad went on Thursday and he didn't! Both boys are missing their friends, so going to classes and going to some day camps over the next couple of weeks will help out with that, I'm sure.

And guess what Saturday is?! Mine and Chris' 11th anniversary! 11 years ago on the 18th, I married my best friend. I am so thankful that God led us to each other! WE are very blessed. We've already got a baby sitter (my niece) and we're planning on going out by ourselves and at the very least getting a meal together!

So there is what's going on around here....it is blissfully boring! I'm so glad that we have this time to recharge our batteries and get some time to relax and enjoy each other!

Flashback Friday--I Can't Make You Love Me

http://christis-blahblahblog.blogspot.com

Is this not just the best unrequited love song ever?! I love it still! It takes me back to college, when I was pining after a certain guy with whom I'd had a little hookup after having a crush on him for quite some time. He didn't feel the same way, though, so it never worked out...but man, did I spend lots of time wishing it would! LOL This song is one that I LOVE to belt out in the car with the radio turned up full blast! Of course, it doesn't hurt that my vocal range is very similar to Bonnie Raitt's, so I can pretend I sound good too!

So what is running through your head today? C'mon and share it! Post it on your site and come back and MckLinky it up so we can come visit ya and see it! Stop by and see another FIRST Wild Card Tour at BlahBlahReviews, too!

Wordless Wednesday--Fun on the Slide

These were taken by my sister at our church's Freedom Celebration on Sunday. It was the first time in 7 years that we had to hold it indoors, but it still went well! As you can see, the boys definitely had fun!

Blog Hop: A favorite photo

Howdy, blog hoppers! For this week's hop, I chose to share a picture of my entire family last summer when we went on a cruise to celebrate my parents' 50th anniversary. It was definitely a trip of a lifetime! I adore my family and am so glad that we all got to be together on this trip. As my nieces and nephews get older and go to college and out on their own, I will look back at this time and remember how much fun we had!

I am very blessed in that we all live in the same town. As a United Methodist preacher's family, it is rare that the entire family settle one place. First, my oldest sister married her high school sweetheart and stayed here. Then my other sister fell in love with one of my brother-in-law's best friends, and they married and settled here as well. I joked from that point on about finding me a good Scott County boy....and I did! My husband was actually in my mom's Kindergarten class years ago! We are very blessed!

Thanks for stopping by, and hope to see ya'll again soon! Don't be a stranger!

Let's try a Blog Hop!

MckMama has started a new feature called a blog hop! Each month will have a different theme. I thought it sounded like fun, so here goes!

For those who don't know me, I'm Christi! I am the mama to Isaac, 8, and Adam, 5, and wife to Chris. I am a teacher--first grade for 12 years--and starting a new job as a Reading Specialist in the fall. I am halfway through a Master's program in Reading, which I am loving! I enjoy reading, singing, dancing, and naps when I can take 'em! I'm very proud of my boys and almost as proud of all my nieces and nephews: Kellie, 26, Ked, 18, Katie, 17, Logan, 16, Maria, 14, Wesley, 12, Keener, 12, Leigh Ann, 9, and Ian, 3. My blog is about a whole lot of nothin' much....pretty much what comes to mind! I do a weekly meme called Flashback Fridays, which you can see below this post! I have two other blogs, Blah Blah Reviews and Showered By Blessings, and contribute at Sited and Blogged as well. I'm also a moderator at My Parent Connection, my favorite message board! I hope ya'll will come back and visit more often!!

MckLinky Blog Hop

Flashback Friday--Punky Brewster

http://christis-blahblahblog.blogspot.com

I watched something the other day, maybe an E! True Hollywood Story, about Punky Brewster. Remember that show? I was in 6th or 7th grade when it started and thought it was the cutest show in the world! I remember going to Magic Mart one time with Roxanne looking for a magazine with a picture of her in it because we were going to try to draw her and win money from some other magazine! I don't think we ever completed that goal!

So what about you? What are you remembering today? Come share! I'm trying a new linky service today called McLinky Have a great 4th, ya'll!

I'm so frustrated!

I've been trying for 2 and a half hours to add those cute little button icons to my posts so that I can possibly get more exposure. I thought I'd finally figured it out, but when I did whatever it was I did, I lost ALL my posts...only had the buttons and my titles! So I deleted that and I'm quitting for the night. If anyone out there knows what I'm talking about and how to help me, I would be so appreciative! I have the graphics I want to use, but just can't get 'em in there to use! WAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Flashback Friday--Torture

http://christis-blahblahblog.blogspot.com

Who else could I honor on the day after Michael Jackson's death than MJ? It is hard to believe, and I am very saddened. I'm sad that he went out as a freak and a cartoon of himself instead of the talented artist he truly was. I had the pleasure of seeing him and his brothers in concert when I was 11 years old. It was the Victory Tour, and he was at the height of his popularity. My sisters actually camped out all night in order to get us tickets to the Neyland Stadium show. It was my first concert ever, but it is, of course, one that I'll always remember!

This song was from that tour....one of my faves from the Victory album (yes, I said album! LOL)

Rest in peace, King of Pop! Our prayers are with you and your family.

What are you remembering today? Please share! Don't forget to sign the Mr Linky, too!

Beach watch...

The events of the day! The Atlantic was SOOO clear today, that even up to 5-6 feet deep, we could see our feet! We saw all sorts of minnows swimming through and see them around our ankles. We even saw 2 dolphins swimming not far at all from us! There were several shrimp boats near us, and I found a clam shell that was still intact! This afternoon we drove over to Southport and went out on the pier. While out there, we saw 2 men catch fish...one caught a really ugly fish that Chris thinks was a monk fish, and then another man caught 2 little sharks while we were there! He let the boys touch them, and Adam even held it and threw it back in the water! I got a pic with my cell and I'll see if I can upload it!

I'm feeling considerably better than I did our first day, but still having to take more meds that usual. However, I came to the realization that I'd been running pretty much nonstop since school got out what with VBS and classes, so no wonder I'm worn out! Fatigue definitely contributes to the pain.

Tonight we're heading to a local barbecue joint and I think we're gonna go to a local seafood place on Thursday evening. Chris fixed us mahi mahi and shrimp last night, which was delicious!

Signing off from coastal Carolina!

We're at the beach!

It is SOOOO nice! We're renting a really nice house that isn't but a few years old. It's funny, the internet view of this house says that it only has 3 bedrooms, so I spent weeks worrying about how in the world we were all going to fit comfortably, and come to find out the owners just say it has 3 bedrooms so they don't get huge crowds in....but the rental company tells families! So all that worrying for nothing--we've got 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, and are just over the dunes from the beach! I was extremely tired from going back and forth to class all week and then riding all day yesterday. We got here and I was worn out and grouchy, but thankfully I had read a Bible verse that has already helped me out a lot---one about instead of being disagreeable, blessing those with whom you disagree! So I'm sure I'm gonna do lots of blessing this week! LOL

Given the stress and fatigue level, Friday and Saturday were painful days as related to fibromyalgia. On Friday I was able to get to sleep by meditating (myself! Didn't even use guided meditation!) instead of using medication, which I always like. I'm not opposed to sleeping pills when I need them, but if I can do it naturally I not only sleep better, but feel less 'drugged' the next morning. I was quite drowsy coming down the road yesterday so I dozed on and off. I was having some hip pain so I also took a nap after we got here. This has been one of those times when having an invisible illness is difficult. When I say I don't feel well but can't give people who haven't been with me through this specifics of WHY, I feel like they think I'm either making it up or exaggerating. That is why I haven't come right out and told Chris' family members until now. I don't bring it up unless it is a problem...and yesterday it definitely was. It was affecting my mood, my emotions, and I really wasn't in the mood to be treated in a condescending manner....which sometimes happens in this crowd! I explained, in tears, to Chris why I was so frustrated and then walked by myself down the beach and back to calm down. I made a conscious effort to be more chipper when I got back and soon it was making a difference! That and God's Word resonating in my head both helped me get through the day til I could collapse in bed without being rude!

We went out to eat this morning for breakfast and then to the beach for several hours. The kids are having a ball! Isaac is LOVING using his body board to ride the waves in, and Adam has already built multiple sand castles. I got a bit too much sun on my arms and chest, but it isn't painful, so I think it will turn to tan tomorrow (I hope!)

Tonight we went to eat at a 'fine dining' restaurant. The food was good, but we were paying for quite a bit of atmosphere as the restaurant is ocean front. One good thing, though: the hostess complimented us as we left for how well-behaved all our children were! That is always nice to hear!

Right now I'm sitting on the covered porch listening to the waves break and looking out over the dunes to the shore....what a life! Chris' brother has gone to the beach to fish, and his wife, their kids, and our kids have gone out there to play and watch him. I'm loving that the boys are finally getting big enough that we don't have to hover over them as much and we can relax and enjoy ourselves more. Even our youngest nephew, though only 3.5, is getting more 'predictable', and as he is the only one we must "run after", we can take turns a bit with that.

What a blessing it is for us to be able to enjoy this time together with our families! I'm so glad to NOT have any homework hanging over my head, but I almost don't know what to do with myself, in a way! I'm sure I'll figure it out!

Flashback Friday--1, 2, 3

http://christis-blahblahblog.blogspot.com

This song popped in my head this morning while I was getting ready to come to class (yes, if you must know, I'm in class....I'm finished w/my project and am waiting to talk to my professor about it!) and thought about how hilarious it was the night I saw Gloria Estafan and Miami Sound Machine at the Riverbend Festival on the banks of the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, TN. In order to get a decent spot to sit, my dad dropped my mom and I off at the site and went to visit some church members who were hospitalized. He came back later and noted to himself that he had parked in the Provident Insurance parking lot.

The concert went well and we had a nice time...until it started POURING the rain afterward! We had little worries, though, cause we knew exactly where we were parked and could go straight to the car!

WRONG!!!

Little did we know that not only were there multiple Provident parking lots, but we also didn't consider how common our white Chevrolet Caprice Classic was--seemed like we'd see what we thought was our car in every lot! We were frustrated at first, but soon realized the rediculousness of our futile attempt to find the car and started laughing. It is now a family legend!

I remember hearing this song at that concert, and even bought a t-shirt to commemorate the event! My mom bought the single and played it for her Kindergarten class to help them learn their numbers, and they played it 'til it was completely unplayable!

What about you? Do you have any fantastic memories you'd like to share with us? Any tv show, commercial, song, etc. you'd like to tell us the story of your memory of it? C'mon, join in the fun! You know you wanna! Link yourself up with Mr Linky here so we can all see what you're remembering!

Funny how things hit you...

I've been driving up to my alma mater weekly for almost a year now, and I have thought more about the good 'ol days when I was a full-time student there more times than I can count. Today, however, some rougher memories came to mind.

There were two tragedies that took place while we were students. The first was during my sophomore year, and the second almost a year later. Both are circumstances that I'll never forget. I remember the exact desk where I was sitting in Miller Hall when we heard a horrific sound coming from the direction of the train tracks. Nothing more was said after the sound, but I did notice later on that afternoon when I was driving to a local elementary school to tutor a child that a train was stopped on the tracks on the edge of campus. I didn't think much of it at the time. When I got back about an hour later, there was a note for me from my roommate for me to find her at her boyfriend's dorm. I honestly don't think I've written about that day since then, and my eyes are filling with tears at the memories....

I didn't make it all the way across campus before I saw Robin, her fella, and the guy I was crushing on at the time, and they called out to me. I walked toward them, and soon my 'guy' folded me in his arms, as they explained that a fellow student had been killed by a train earlier....that had been what we had heard during class, was the train trying to stop.

In order to understand this well, you have to know that we were very accustomed to the train....it was just part of our life there. We crossed the tracks on foot daily as we headed to the local post office to get our mail, and some students lived across the tracks in small houses that served as dorms. We honestly got to where we didn't even give the train a second thought, and I'll admit that I've been near the tracks and realized the train was upon us. I truly believe that this was the case with Keith...that he was reading something and simply forgot where he was. Also, a freak of aerodynamics due to the mountains surrounding the school. They are positioned somehow work so that when you were actually right on the tracks, you didn't hear the train whistle as clearly as you do farther away from them.

It was a very sad day. I even remember what I was wearing that day. I remember walking up to Stuart Hall, a boys dorm, with friends where we all gathered and called our parents to make sure that they knew we were okay. I remember saying to Nut, "I don't deal well with death...." and him answering,"None of us do...". Little did we know that he and I would have a tragedy hit us even closer to home a year later, when we both lost a close friend.

I was sitting in my Teaching of Reading class when our professor came in and told us that what he had to tell us was never easy to do, but as educators we would have to deal with such things...and that our classmate Scott had killed himself the night before. I reacted immediately and pretty dramatically by bursting into tears. Looking back, I realize that I had an immediate panic attack then and there. Dr. Thompson gave us permission to leave class, and 3 of us did: Robin, Paige, and I. Paige went home to grieve with her parents, and Robin and I found friends with which to mourn. I'll never forget the bear hug in which David, our scholarship coordinator and friend, squeezed me as he, too, wondered why.

He was my friend. I sat in front of him in a class only the week before. He was in a scholarship program with me, and had been one of the first people I met on campus. He was one of my buddies...I remember him buying me a Mountain Dew at a party once when I didn't want to drink that night. We went together with other friends to see The Bodyguard. He rode in my car...he'd been to my room....he was my friend, and I would have done anything to keep him from taking his own life.

Though the details are not important in this context, we do know them, and know how deeply they affected those who loved him most. It was a heartbreaking moment that didn't have to happen. It reaffirmed to me that mental illness was VERY real, and that it needs to be addressed--and this thought came to mind later when I realized that given my history with mental illness, I would probably need to be on medication for the rest of my life in order to not follow Scott's path. It hurts even today, 16 years later. I again remember what I was wearing, and have the sweater still. I remember where we went to eat. I remember my roommate feeling as though she needed to be with her former boyfriend comforting him, and the probably pivotal decision she made NOT to go to him. I remember friends who called our room to tell us that they were thinking of us, as they knew he was our friend.

Today as I was driving on campus, I thought about Scott...and thought about how much he missed. Though Keith's accident affected me to the point that I still have a very healthy respect for trains, it was just that--an accident. Scott's death was not. He made a deliberate decision to end his life entirely too soon. What would he be like today? Would he have gained weight like we all have? Would his thick blonde hair be receding? Would he be a daddy now? And who would he have married? Would he be teaching, or even in school administration? He will never know how much he missed out on! I weep today for the life that could have been, if only he had tried to stick it out.

I cried today. I had to wipe tears away before entering my class. And when I got a chance, I went and shared my thoughts with one of his roommates...because I knew he would understand. Though I didn't cry then, I know that if I had needed to, that I had a welcome shoulder to lean upon as I wept...because I know he has wept as well. We agreed that we think of him often. His death was such a waste! He doesn't know the pain that he left behind. This, too, showed me why I always needed to resist any temptation I ever have to take my own life, because it would mean a way out of pain for me, but would leave such a path of destruction and despair for those left behind.

I'll never know if I could have said anything to Scott to change his mind--probably not, but I will always, ALWAYS wonder what might have been different if I had reached out. What if I had just spoken to him more in class when I last saw him? I know that I'm not the only one who has wondered such things.

Keith, Scott--your memories linger on. Your presence is still at Emory, and today your presence visited me. I hate you're not here with us anymore. You will always be in my heart.

FIRST Tour and some random thoughts

I've got a review posted over at Blah Blah Reviews! Usually I'd put up my button and link that way, but I'm using my sister's computer, so I don't have it saved! So just go on over there and check it out! While you're there, enter my giveaway for a pair of so cute Energizer Bunny slippers!

Now, some random thoughts! We are at Lake Junaluska, a United Methodist retreat center in western North Carolina where the Annual Conference of our church is being held. We rent a house with my parents and sister's family. Unfortunately, this year we're not getting to stay for as long since I am actually missing class today to be here, and have class the rest of the week.

I took the boys down to the playground for a little while. I can't believe in 8 years of Isaac's life I haven't taken him down there...what a bad mommy I am! We played, swung on the swings, and the boys built a pyramid sand castle! While we were there, Isaac asked me if he could bring his Bible with him when we go to the beach next week with Chris' family. "Of course!" was my response. We will plan on going to church on Sunday while we're down there, though the rest of the family may not. In my family, we have always gone to church, no matter where we are...if we're vacationing or driving down the road, we find the nearest church and go. I appreciate this as a mom, and thankfully Chris agrees! Silly me--my gratefulness to the Lord for dying for my sins doesn't stop while I'm away from home!

ANYWAY--back to the point, that Isaac asked about bringing his Bible. He said that when we were taking a break in the house (otherwise known as naptime for Adam and a 3 year old cousin) he could spend some time reading his Bible. What Mama wouldn't love hearing her 8 year old suggest this?

Random thought #2: yesterday the kids sang some songs that they learned at Vacation Bible School last week. They sang and did some sign language to "Friend of God" and it was SOOO sweet, it brought tears to my eyes! I'm so thankful that my children have a welcoming environment where they can learn about the Lord and express this love freely!

Random thought #3, though semi-related: The couple that had been leading our children's choir are no longer going to be at our church. He is a local pastor and has been given an appointment at a local church. This is an issue for one reason: he and his wife kind of 'took over' leadership of the Children's Choir years ago, and all the other volunteers quit except for Chris, me, and one other man. NOT a good scene. So we didn't get any warning about this move....who is going to lead the children's choir? I'll be willing to bet it will either me be or one sister. He also is the 'technology guru' of the church, but we agreed (my sister, Chris, brother-in-law, and I) that between the tech-savvy teenagers and us, we could continue to get such things as slide presentations done! We will need to purchase a projector, however.

Random thought #4: we were talking earlier about different 'obsessions' Isaac has had over the years. One such obsession was naming all makes of cars as we passed by. The first time Isaac watched Spiderman, when watching the scene where Spiderman threw a bad guy out the window onto a car below, Isaac didn't notice Spiderman's strength or the bad guy being defeated, he said, "Was that a Buick?!" We all cracked up! Isaac was also fascinated by intercoms (which he called 'hello's) and smoke detectors (which he called 'smokes'). It is fun to remember the silly things he's said over the years!

So there is your random thoughts of Christi update! Ta-ta for now!

Flashback Friday--I Want Your Sex

http://christis-blahblahblog.blogspot.com

OH, but this song was sooooo bad in the late 80s! I still think George Michael is incredibly sexy...what a shame that he wouldn't think the same about me because I'm a girl!

This song was big the summer that we moved from Big Stone Gap to Rossville. I watched a LOT of MTV that summer for a couple of reasons: #1--we hadn't had it on our cable previously, so I was enamored as any teenager would be and #2--that was the summer of the Ollie North trial, so all other tv, including my fave soap, were preempted with the televised trial that summer! Funny what things you remember, huh?

I think it was that summer that I found an awesome poster of George (we're on a first name basis, ya know...) that I had on my wall for YEARS on a trip to Gatlinburg!

So what about you....what do you remember today? I'm trying something new with Mr Linky...hope it works! C'mon, you know you wanna share your memories with the whole world....or at least with my readers and yours! LOL

Want to encourage service in your children??

Service,Giving,Mom It Forward

I want my boys to realize that there are things bigger out there than just their personal needs and wants, and to put others before themselves. In order to do that, I am going to have to teach it to them! So when I read about Mom It Foward's Summer of Service Challenge, I knew it would be a GREAT thing in which we could participate!

Service has been part of my life for all my life. As a daughter of a United Methodist minister, it was a way of life....going to see people in the hospital or nursing homes, giving to those who were less fortunate...it was just what we did. In college, service through the Bonner Scholars Program helped pay for my education as I committed to doing service both during the academic year and in the summer. Before I got married, I volunteered a week of time for a camp with Middle school age kids for a few summers, and have volunteered in various roles at our church regularly since then.

I want my boys to start feeling how good it feels to help others. They enjoy our yearly Christmas Caroling venture to the local nursing home and shut-ins from our church and community. I know that they have Giving Spirits, and I want to cultivate that. This challenge is PERFECT to work toward this! To learn more, please visit Mom it Forward's website and tell my friends Carissa and Jyl that Christi sent ya! Also stop by twitter on Tuesday evenings starting at 9 EST for Girls Night Out (just use the hashtag #gno)!

Wordless Wednesday--The Awesome Foursome plus!

We were buddies back in the day...middle school days, that is! We had a picnic at the park on the last day of 8th grade, and even took pics to prove it! Twenty two (could that be right?!) years later, we got together with our kids once again.

Thanks to Julie's hubby's great photog skillz for the pic!

Got my hair cut and colored!

Whaddaya think?

I think I like it, but I haven't had a chance to work with it myself yet! I think it will be an easy to deal with summer cut.

I've tried to be productive for the first few days of summer break....yesterday I cleaned out from under one side of the bathroom sinks, and threw away a whole bag of trash. I did several loads of laundry, too. Then we have Bible School this week, so that kind of takes up the evenings! Today I went and got my hair done, then reorganized Isaac's dresser, including boxing up clothes that he won't need for the time being. The boys actually helped me with the boxing part (write that down!). Then I straightened up Isaac's bookshelves and brought in some books that Chris had just basically thrown in a tote earlier. I looked up the Grade Level Equivalents for some of them using Scholastic's Teacher Book Wizard, and I'll try to continue to do that for other books....that way I have an actual listing of what I have here (and I probably ought to do it with books for school since I have easy access to them this summer, huh?).

I have moments of melancholy over changing schools still (Thank you Lisa for your sweet words....I love you!!) but I'm sure that will come and go for a while. Next on the project list is to finish the bathroom cabinet, continue work on laundry (which is eternal...) and clean the upholstery on the couch cause apparently I need to flip at least one couch cushion...not sure what happened, but there's a hole in the fabric. OOOOOPS!

I've got class later, so I'm off to enjoy some 'down time' before I have to hit the road!

Hope everyone's week is off to a great start!

It's done

The school year, that is! I have such mixed emotions since I'm leaving the school where I have taught for 12 years. All my things have been packed up and the stuff I wanted to keep has been brought home. The rest is either being used by my coworkers or thrown out.

I've done better than I thought I would with this....many moves from church to church with my family have certainly helped. But the feelings are the same....a tad empty, lonely, uncertain, apprehensive, mixed with anticipation, excitement, and hopefulness. Since plans for the specific school(s) where I will be teaching changed over the past week, this had added to the mixed emotions. I'm now projected to be teaching at one school on Mondays and Tuesdays and another the rest of the week. I know people at both schools, but there are still uncertainties. I am not sure where my 'space' will be at one school, and will be sharing space at the other. Of course, since I am halfway through my graduate program, I'm a little unsure of myself as far as what I need to be doing! I have some great people behind me to support me and cheer me on, though, so in that, I'm blessed.

It is not goodbye forever to my coworkers since my sons will be attending school there. But it does mean that I am leaving the place I've called 'home' for 12 years for 200 days a year, at least 6 hours a day. It is the place where I was teaching when I met my fiance, when I got married, through two pregnancies and births, and two bouts with Post-Partum Depression. It is the school that supported me as my grandmother died, and through 2 surgeries for each parent. The faculty are the people with whom I I wanted to share my joys, sorrows, frustrations, and heartaches with, and into which I put much blood, sweat, and tears.

There are still tears unshed, I know. As a teacher, I go through a 'blue' time each summer as I hand off one group of students to the next grade. This year I'm not only handing off my students, I'm also handing off my coworkers, my classroom, my place of comfort and handiwork. I know I'll be just fine and that God has ordained this process and will continue to. Even so, I would appreciate your prayers as I embark on this new journey.

And if any of my Shoemaker gals read this, I will ALWAYS consider myself one of you, and hold a special place for you in my heart!! I love you!

Flashback Friday--It Takes Two

http://christis-blahblahblog.blogspot.com

Ahh, this song brings back good high school memories! It reminds me of cheering for basketball games, bus rides back and forth for away games, being super skinny....those were the days!

It was a rough time in my life, and lots of the memories are foggy because of the emotional difficulties I was experiencing, but there WERE some good times. Not saying I'd go back and do it all over again, but there are good memories!

So whaddaya remembering right now? Mr Linky still isn't available unfortunately, but I do want to read your posts! Please leave me a comment to let me know that you have it up!

Wordless Wednesday--He graduates today

I can't believe it. I was there when he was born...and have watched him grow, and it has gone by so quickly! I'm so proud of him, and so pleased with this young man he's become. I'm praying that he continues to excell and finds happiness in his every endeavor!

I love you, Ked! Congrats!
